Transportation and logistics

The transportation and logistics industry sector comprises a wide range of service providers, covering all modes of transport – air, road, rail and sea – as well as related services such as warehousing and handling, plus extra services like packaging, labelling and assembly. In addition to these ‘physical’ services, transport and logistics also involves a variety of planning, organisational and management services to ensure the smooth running of transportation and logistic processes.

Companies that have established regional distribution centres in Singapore include Hewlett Packard, LVMH, Numonyx, Roche Diagnostics and Schering-Plough.

Job opportunities
Singapore has long been recognised as one of the top shipping and logistics hubs in Asia, with excellent port facilities that provide extensive linkages to the world.

Fresh graduates can look forward to jobs in some of the following major players in the logistics industry:

  • YCH Group
  • Keppel Logistics
  • Schenker
  • FedEx
  • Land Transport Authority Singapore.

Logistics jobs for fresh graduates include:

  • Logistics analyst: handles shipping documents and work with the logistics department to help process orders.
  • Logistics coordinator: makes arrangements for transportation and warehousing of your client’s orders.
  • Transport planner: plans road, rail and bus routes based on transportation models.
  • Transport engineering officer: works with a team of engineers and technical staff to regulate, manage, monitor and control engineering works along roads.

Most logistics jobs allow you to start without any experience; and you then gain experience while working. Jobs in transportation typically require you to have more experience in the relevant industry but you will eventually gain experience over time.

Good planning and analytical skills are required, especially when it comes to large-scale planning in the lines of logistics and transportation. You will also need to communicate well and ensure adequate communication among various levels throughout the company.
