Career opportunities

Networking and communications

  • Network Engineer -- As a network engineer, you plan, manage and evaluate the technical planning and installation of local area networksc (LAN) This includes supporting the enterprise network by ensuring system workability, capacity and security monitoring. A degree in engineering or computer science is required. Career prospects normally allow you to progress towards the roles of chief architect, it director or program director.
  • Database Administrator -- Database administrators design and build databases for organisations to store, manage and extract data effectively. They oversee the performance of the database, monitor its growth and capacity, and troubleshoot database problems such as software failures. A degree in computer science or information technology is a prerequisite. The Job outlook for a database administrator is expected to remain stable.

Employers include manufacturers of hardware and peripherals, and communications/network infrastructure providers.

Software and applications

  • Software Engineer - The software engineer researches, designs, tests and implements software to meet clients’ needs. A diploma or degree in computer science or information technology is typically required.
  • Programmer - As a programmer, you are expected to know a wide range of programming languages, which equip you with the skills to write application or system programmes. Common tasks include writing computer programmes, coding and developing tests to determine if codes work. A diploma or degree in computer science or information technology is typically required. Although programming jobs are increasingly outsourced to countries with lower wages, programmers with specialised technical skills are still in high demand. This can be in niche areas such as cybersecurity, web and wireless environments.

Employers include application solutions software, development tools, system infrastructure software, component and embedded software companies

Infocomm research and development
This includes consulting services, implementation services, operation management services, processing services, managed services operations, IT education, training and support services.

  • Security Consultant - As a security consultant, you will perform IT security analysis to ensure integrity of IT systems and to identify potential security vulnerabilities. A degree in computer science or Information technology is required. The outlook for this job is bright, as more organisations consider in-house security consultants to be a staple.

Telecommunication services
This includes basic fixed lines services, mobile and wireless voice communication, data and internet access services/providers.

  • Project Manager - This role lets you manage, define and implement technology projects. This can be in the form of negotiating with vendors and team leaders to ensure the project is smooth, and build relationships with users, management and technical staff during systems implementation. Project managers may come from different backgrounds, although typically a degree or diploma in computer science or information technology, or management of information systems is preferred. An MBA qualification or a certification in project management such as Certificate in IT Project Management (CITPM) or equivalent will be highly valued. Compensation packages for project managers often have a fixed and a variable component, which will depend on performance.
