Biotechnology

Singapore is a top choice for leading global biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to set up regional headquarters here, given its wealth of talent, excellent resources and infrastructure, and advanced technology. Today, some of the world’s top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have invested in more than 25 manufacturing facilities in Singapore. They include Abbott, GlaxoSmithKline, Lonza, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Novartis, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis, Schering-Plough and Wyeth

Job opportunities
Jobs are aplenty with many leading global companies that have set up regional headquarters in Singapore.

Fresh graduates can look forward to jobs in research institutes such as:

  • A*STAR
  • Biomedical Sciences Institute (BMSI)
  • Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN)

These represent just a few of the organisations operating on the island. For a full list of agencies and research institutes with potential job listings go to www.a-star.edu.sg/a_star/199-Careers

Jobs for fresh graduates include:

  • Lab technician: handles lab equipment and ensures the proper running of the laboratory
  • Research officer: conducts research in different areas of expertise
  • Research scientist: leads or is part of a research team handling research projects
  • Research engineer: involved in the technical aspects of research.

Most of the research-based jobs require a postdoctoral degree, but there are more entry-level exceptions such as the position of a research officer, where you will need at least an upper second honours bachelor degree. Prior experience such as internships in relevant agencies will give you a better advantage too.

Graduates hoping to work in biotechnology will need to be meticulous in their work, dedicated to their research, communicate well with their research team and constantly think of new breakthrough ideas in research.
